  • At first I helped my kids pick out books and I tried to get "educational" ones. But then I realized that I liked to get books for enjoyment so now I let them get what they want, as long as it's in accordance with our standards. My son will get a Star Wars book every single time. The girls will usually get a book about a cartoon character (Arthur, Martha Speaks) or animal-related.

  • He's old enough to pick out his own books. He loves Goosebumps books and things with Pirates and Vampires and freaky stuff like that. He also likes to take out cookbooks (he's 7 and loves to read the different recipes, go figure) and various non-fiction books.

I try to pick out a wider variety of fiction books for him. Last year we read Farmer Boy and I have Indian in the Cupboard planned for in a couple of weeks. I also have given him some Beverly Cleary books to read and he's read different "Fudge" books.

He still likes reading picture books though. Dr. Seuss and Halloween ones are among some of his favorites.

  • My DD (5) likes to pick out books by the cover, or by the character. If she likes what is on the cover, she will pick it up. Or if she wants a specific character, we go and find it. Once she starts reading, I'm sure she will take a bit more time picking, but for now, she usually just picks by the cover. Sometimes we get some interesting books.
