Why is negative propaganda and rumor so much easier to believe than truth?

It seems as if just about every religious path out there has negative propaganda and rumor to battle. Catholics worship idols, Pagans align with the devil, Atheists hate god, Christians are hateful, JWs will brainwash you, Mormons are a cult, Muslims are violent and angry... The list goes on.

So why is it so easy to believe these falsities over truth? Is it just because people like drama and want something to feel anger towards in order to make themselves feel better? Or is it simply because these things scare people away from looking for the truth?

What's your take?

**BTW, before someone jumps down my throat, I know none of those things are true, they are simply examples!**

  • I agree with the drama part. Some people, the ones most likely to believe the false rumors are the ones least likely to believe anything truthful about others. So, they hear the bad stuff and just assume it's true because anything else just isn't believable to them.

  • Maybe bc it's easier to think everyone else is horrible than to consider they might be right. I don't know.

  • Because people want to believe their group is the "best" they'll search for things that bring down another group. It's the same with sports teams, cliques in junior high and political parties.

  • Religion in itself is simply a comfort for people, because most human beings need a reason for everything. Most people NEED something to believe in, most people are simply unable to accept that we are unable to get proper answers to our Why's? And people become attached to their chosen religion, and when someone becomes attached and falls in love with something, they will try their hardest to protect it and will stand up for it at all costs. Much like most of us would do for our children.

  • cause they are too lazy to do the research themselves to see if its truth or lies. lots of times the person spewing this hate is a trusted friend, relative, or religious figure...and we all know how some ppl refuse to think their religious leader could be wrong! its a lot easier to hate something if your blind to their true beliefs. plus, it validates their need to be in the right religious path.

  • I think you're right-people love drama! Also, people don't like others who are different than them. They feel their religion is right and your religion is wrong. It's stupid really!
I respect all religions and have taken a variety of beliefs for myself from many different religions. When it comes down to it every religion is basically the same.

  • Because it's easier to believe what you hear instead of taking the time to actually learn about something you don't understand.

  • I think its easier because its simple. For example, hearing someone say Mormons are a cult don't join, is easier to hear & comprehend than to sit down and listen to one of us list our 12 Articles of Faith, or to sit down and let us explain the beliefs we have. In one sentence people can put stuff out there that people feel is enough information to avoid a religion. However it usually takes much more than 1 sentence to really understand what a group of people believe, which means more time, AND people are lazy! :)

  • Because it is easier to listen to (and believe) something short and simple like one of thos phrases than to sit down and actually find out what a religion is all about.

  • Anyone can say something negative and people will accept it because it's easy, It's hard to research and really understand every religionout there and most people aren't interested in really studying world religions. Look how easy it is to Google something and take as fact any website that has information on it.
