I need care package ideas for a 7 day hospital stay

My best friend, mother of 3 young children, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer.
They are removing the tumor and part of her colon. She'll have to be in the hospital for 7 days. I live very far away.
I need some ideas for a care package for her and/or her family.
I'll send flowers right away but want to send something else.
Thanks!

  • I thought about edible arrangments but I'm not sure she's going to be able to eat real food. She mentioned that she was going out to dinner with her husband for her "last meal".
I found an Italian restaurant that delivers in their area. Yay!

  • Get a photo album and fill it with pictures of her kids.(if you can, if not put in pictures that will make her smile)
Crossword puzzle books, word searches etc...
Trashy tabloid magazines with nothing really important to say.
Write her a letter. Actually write it, don't type it :)
    Some comfy slippers.
    A deck of cards.
Anything you can think of that will either help pass the time or that will make her smile.

The care package alone will make her feel loved.

  • Yeah if she's going in for cancer treatments then food will be the last thing she will want around her. Maybe some mints or something. I know when I was sick and nauseated having mints or tic tacs helped because when my mouth felt cool and minty fresh, I felt less sick to my stomach.

  • you could sent the following items too:

    Lotions
    funny stuff animal
    anything to pamper

But if you can call her and talk to her everyday.
Just let her know you are think about her.
Also sent something for the kids. They have to be worried about their mom.

  • Big note to the nurse. Something like "If this one gives you trouble, call me, because if YOU give HER trouble I'll be right there!"

crayons/paper for the kids to draw pictures for mom.

if there are girls: lotion/ nailpolish, etc. Stuff for the kids to do: candyland, games, etc. snacks for the kids/ dad (bake them brownies!)

HUGS to you for thinking of this and prayers for your friend and her family.

  • Thanks, everyone.
I feel so helpless. I live 3 1/2 hours away. I am going to see her the week after she gets out of the hospital, but can't go for the next 2 weeks.

  • Keep in mind that when she's in the hospital she most likely wont be allowed to have anything with strong smells and perfumes, so watch what you get as far as stuff to paper herself goes. You want her to be able to use the stuff you send her.

I'm sure she'll feel wonderful knowing she has a friend like you who loves and cares for her this much.
