  • reading is one those things that require specific cognitive connections to be made - not necessarily connections you can force either. It's a developmental process that falls into place when the child is ready. Most children have had those cognitive milestones click into place until they're 5 or 6 years old. Some a little later. Some earlier.

My son was 2 1/2. He read books at that age. My DD was 3. She took a little longer to really take off reading confidently. She got glasses at 5 and took off reading anything in sight once things stopped being flurry. Some of their friends read before starting grade school. Most, however, did not read until 1st grade (per district curriculum guidelines.) We did nothing special. We just read daily and played games that introduced letter sounds and blends. It was all fun - and they got it when they were ready.

  • my son is ready..he sounds out all the letters. I've worked with him but he is never interested in anything i try to teach him..he is going to have to have someone else start him out. He gets bored and frustrated with me. He is 5.

  • My 13 year old started reading very simple stories before she turned 5. She was a pretty decent reader by the time she turned 6.

  • Mine started reading at about 2 1/2. He could read all the signs we drove by. He has been the school spelling B champ for 3 years in a row. I wish he was even half as good at math.
