Would you let your 7 year old son carry a purse?

I know a woman whose son wants to carry a purse. I don't know if it's because he's seen his mom do it or what, but the dad says absolutely no way. The mother, on the other hand, sees nothing wrong with it. What would you do if your son approached you with this?

  • Thats a hard one. I think I would start by telling him that purses are for girls and that if he wants to play with one thats okay but he can't take one out in public or to school etc.

  • Sure. If he wants to I don't see how it's hurting him or anyone else. So yeah, I would let him.

  • I would have to say yes, we dont do the whole dolls are for girls, trucks are for boy thing in our house. I would def try and make it a lo key color or whatever but hed still be allowed if thats what he wanted, and my husband would be fine with it as well.

  • If I had a boy, I'd have no problem with it. What's the difference in a boy carrying a purse and a girl packing a football around? If it's what makes them happy, and it doesn't hurt anyone, what's the big deal?
I'd let him know that some people may make fun of him for it so he knows what he's in for. And if he still wanted to do it, I'd give him credit for being brave enough to be himself and make himself happy even faced with teasing. :-)

  • I agree with Kiwi..I would let my son. In fact my 2 year old loves going into his grandmother's bag and purse so she bought him a little one. It is cute watching him walk around with it. If he wanted one when he is 7 fine by me. I think people read into these things too much and make too much a deal out of something that really doesn't matter.

  • He's a child, who cares. My husband freaks when our 1 year old plays with his sisters purse. Parents shouldn't force their kids to play with "girl" toys or "boy"toys. Let them play with what toy they want.

  • No, there are great back packs/messenger bags if he feels the need to carry something.

  • agree with blainesmom
but if he was reallt into
i guess i would try to take a step back and look at him through non mom eyes
does he has a different gender indenitity?
i also think his father would not go for this
so i think even if i could compromise on him taking some place, if would case a riff between me and his dad

i hope i could handle a gender indentity diiferent than society norm with grace
