What would the world look like without religion?

Hypothetically speaking of course...

Better, worse or the same?

  • Peaceful. Morals come from the experience of living in the group, tribe or society. We have highly developed brains and can tell what is right and wrong, what hurts us or someone else, what is good for us and the group, or what is bad for the group but good for us, just or unjust.
I believe that these concepts can evolve as we try to survive, find food, shelter and everything else that is important to live and we realize we cannot do everything on our own so we heave to respect others in order to get help from them. That in my opinion has the ability to form our 'morals'.
BTW , religion does not have the monopoly for morality. I have seen enough religious people being cruel, commit crime, start conflicts, wars because of religion.

  • It could go both ways. It could be better in that without religion, we wouldn't have (or have had) all of the wars that were fought on the basis of religion. On the other hand, it could be worse because man would no longer be bound by the tenets and morals of his religion and that would and could lead to even bloodier wars and greater monsters than the modern world has managed to create.

  • The same... Even in cultures where religion isn't the factor for abuse or slavery we still have it. There will always be a "class" system, always people who hate because of race or sex and there is any number of other beliefs that people could hate for... It's human nature to find reasons to be "better" than our neighbors... And because of that with or without religion, people will always find reasons for hate and war...

  • And the NYC skyline would still be graced by the twin towers.

  • The same. Instead of fighting over religion we'd be fighting over butter side up vs butter side down.

  • technically, it'd look the same. 'better' or 'worse' would be in the eye of the beholder. there'd be fewer statues and buildings, but the same.

  • Yes they would still have morals and respect. It is in the human nature. You should be that way because you want to not because you are scared and forced into doing it. I think the world would be allot less judgemental.

  • I agree Sabrina. I forgot to say that there will always be good and bad people, those who abide the group's rules or not, and a person like that has to be punished so that others are not hurt by them, this would be known as justice system.

  • It would either be beautiful, or a huge mess. I'm not sure which. :)
