th4 best way to tell, is to look at the curly tendrils to either side of the watermelon, when they turn brown, the watermelon is ready to pick. Also, when the underside starts to turn while, or light yellow, it is close to picking time. I just picked mine from using thse techniques & it was perfect & delish!
Thumping is not the best way to tell. You have had to thump quite a bit of watermelon to know what it should sound like. Also, difference sized watermelons will have a different sound, so that can be a more difficult way to find out.
