Going to the gym

Is it normal to gain weight when you start going to the gym? My DH and I joined the gym last weekend and I've gone about 4 times since then. I started out around 135 and I'm nearly 140 now. I've been right at 135 for the last year or so, so I'm curious as to why I'm gaining now. I didn't think muscle would show up that quickly.

  • It could be water retention - be sure you are drinking enough water to rehydrate after sweating. I usually add an extra 8 oz bottle of water for every half hour I work out.

  • Well, muscle weighs more than fat. You aren't eating more now, are you? Because you are hungrier or think 'I will work it off at the gym?'

  • Muscle does show up pretty quickly. If you are eating more because you feel tired after the gym, this could be the reason, too.

  • My eating habits definitely haven't changed. I'll try drinking more water!!
