How long can a person stay........

Last week I was 2 1/2 cm dilated and 70% effaced. Doc thought I would deliver by this past weekend and well I didn't! It's been a week now and I haven't progressed much at all!!! 3cm and 75% effaced!! I'm due the 26th and it's my first, so I'm just wondering how long can a person stay in the 70%'s??

  • With our third I was 2 cm and 75% for 3 weeks. I was 4 cm and bulging when I went into labor on my own, the morning after my due date.

  • Forever. Not meaning to worry you, but I was 4cm dilated and like 80-90% effaced for over a week.... And then I got induced.. still no contractions or anything signalling labor... But my labor only lasted 5.5 hours.. prolly cuz I was already half way there!
    Good luck!

  • You can walk around for weeks. dilation means nothing because many women don't fully dilate until in active labor. this is why i never allowed vaginal exams. the information is not useful. just relax. you aren't over due until your 42nd week is complete. and even then induction isn't indicated unless there is a known problem. most first timers go on average to 41 weeks 2 days. a due date is an estimate not an expiration date! only 5% of women give birth at exactly 40 weeks by random chance.

It's fine! Relax and be patient.

  • Honestly, those measurements don't mean much. OBs check you basically to make you feel like you're making progress. They also check, in case you need to be induced.
I had a patient who was at 4cm for weeks. Try to be patient, I know it's SOOOO hard at this point! I promise you won't be pregnant forever!! =)

  • The AVERAGE duration of pregnancy for a first time mother is 41weeks, 1day. VEs are useless in predicting the start of labor.
