Beta fish with swollen face?

Does anyone know what this could be from?

  • Sometimes they will put their gills out... is the swelling midway back on their head, behind the eyes? My son has had two betta fishes over the years and both would do this sometimes... it would almost look like they had a lion's mane at the sides of their heads. I never looked too deeply in it, but always took it as some sort of show of dominance because bettas are aggressive/competitive fish and will puff out their fins to look bigger or more intimidating. Not that our fish have anyone to compete against since we only have one at a time! HTH!

  • Male betts are very aggressive. Even if you have only one he can probably see his reflection on his tank and thinks its another male in his tank and so he will blow his gills up to make himself look bigger.

  • gill disease????, the symptoms are, gills are swolen, fins are torn or frayed, eyes may be cloudy, hazy or protruding.
