Do animals have personalities?

I was telling someone about my cat's personality, and he scoffed saying animals don't have personalities, that the owners assign personalities to them.

What is your opinion?

  • Yes, definitely! All of my pets have had their own personalities, differences, and little quirks about them. If not, every cat would act just like every other cat, every dog just like every other dog... this is obviously not true! Right now we have two guinea pigs and they definitely have different personalities... one is a big, placid lap pet and the other one is very high strung and 'wired.'

  • Do people have personalities? Aren't we, on a biological level, animals? Of course animals have a personality, and just like people they are formed around both nature and nurture...

  • Well, assigned or not, my dogs have personality!
Boss is all uppity, snobbish. She'll turn her nose up to anything. She won't eat the cheap dog food, she won't play with the puppy, just lays there and stares at her lazily, and I swear shakes her head!
Poofy is a total playful puppy. She's happy, her tail is never not twirling and she thinks she is just the biggest dog in the world (she's not!)

  • Of course they do. I have 4 cats and each one is very different, with his or her own likes and dislikes. Human personalities are of course far more complex and I believe the complexity of animal personalities varies among species, but anyone who claims that animals don't have their own personalities or temperaments doesn't know very much about animals.

  • Yes and that's why humans get along with them.

  • I don't get this myself. I have had numerous pets, and each acted differently, had different likes and dislikes, etc.
