Who's responsible?

One of our neighbors in an apartment building told us she has cockroaches. Does she have to pay to get rid of them? Or is that the landlord's job?

  • really apartments should be the landlord because if one apartment has roaches they will spread to every apartment. houses are different. A landlord for a home can get very specific if they want to. I would think with an apartment building they would have to take care of a bug problem. I would ask the health department

  • Landlord all the way. We moved in an apartment without realizing the building had a roach problem, we were pissed. We had to buy our own spray and stuff because the landlord was such a slum lord. Secondly, usually if a tenant has to repair something, they take it out of the rent. Landlords are supposed to repair stuff. Upkeep is stuff like new lightbulbs and keeping the place clean, that is on the tenant. But furnace breaking, infestation issues, fridge breaking down, that's all landlord.

  • I thought for sure it was the landlord's job too- but my husband said he thought it would be the tenants.

What would the contract say? Tenants are responsible for upkeep and repair? Or something like that?.
