Why do they say that girls are adults when the are 18, but boys are adults when they turn 21?

I've always wondered this. Does anyone know?

  • I've never heard of this but perhaps they mean maturity wise. Women mature faster than men.

  • I've never heard that! Male or Female, everyone is an adult at 18... Sometimes younger if they are emancipated or married.

  • Nobody says that. Everyone is an adult at 18. I think what you're looking for is why do male and female have different maturity levels. I believe girls are fully mature at 22 and men at 25. Something like that. Thats not opinion tho, thats science.

  • I think they just mean maturity wise. Girls tend to mature quicker than boys, and it is usually a three year difference.

  • Didn't realize that I posted anonymous, but I'm the OP. People do say it. I hear it a lot. But they aren't talking about maturity, they are talking about when they are actually considered an adult.

  • Wow, no one else has ever heard anyone say this? That's strange. The next time I hear someone say it, I guess I'll have to ask them why.

  • I have never heard of this. It's not like they make males wait until the age of 18 to vote or to join the military.
