How do I transplant a lilac bush?

I have a lilac bush that is getting to big. I would like to split it, keep half where it is and replant the other half in another spot.

  • humm..I get in there and expose some roots and take a look at it.....maybe just power half a scrub out, leaving the good piece in case it fails?

  • I would stop by a nursery and ask them for pointers.

  • there should be "sprouts" that you can easily dig up and transfer, but it if you want to split a bush... i'd agree and call a nursery in your area.

  • We just tear out some roots and plop it in the ground elsewhere. If you're splitting a bush, dig up and separate the root cluster with two pitchforks and then plant them both.
