Do you think she was drunk & stoned?

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – The scar is almost gone from the highway where a suburban mother sped the wrong way for more than a mile with a minivan full of children while stoned and drunk, sparking a fiery crash that killed her and seven other people.

The grass burned away by Diane Schuler's red minivan has almost grown back on the highway median. Streaks of black ash have been washed away by 12 months of snow and rain.

But questions remain about what drove the 36-year-old suburban mom to guzzle booze and smoke marijuana on the way home from a camping trip with her two children and three nieces — especially for those who lost loved ones in the fiery wreck.

  • Wow, that is absolutely horrible. How tragic. Who knows why she did it, but regardless, it was a horrible mistake.

  • I think the Q&A section alone proves there is no shortage of mothers who think getting stoned or being stoned around kids is no big deal, same with drinking, and there are also those mothers who feel things like seat belt laws, speed limits, and other common sense things are put on earth for no reason than to inconvenience them, just like the delusional ones who insist they "drive better drunk". It's only a matter of time before a mother comes along who believes in all 3 things.

Lets face it - the standard joking advice to someone who is going to spend a weekend supervising 5 kids is to drink. The "idea" isn't so ridiculous you can't imagine it. The problem is someone actually doing it.

  • One name comes to mind: Gordan House. Right after his accident when he killed a woman and her three daughters, his family swore up and down he wasn't drunk because he didn't drink. Nevermind that 5 hours AFTER the accident his blood alcohol was still well above the legal limit.

  • She has a bottle of vodka in the car. Does that sound like someone who seldom drinks?

It's sad she had to destroy so many lives along with her own.

And yes NP, sadly there are plenty of women on CM who claim they drive perfectly while texting, drinking, doing drugs, etc.

  • It says there that she was, so maybe they found something in the tox report. I wonder why she did it though. Seems strange from just this little blurb.

  • Her family was definitely in serious denial about her addiction. She should not have been behind that wheel period.

  • Thats so sad... well you mentioned she was at a fast food joint before hand? I was watching a program the other day and two kids were arrested for putting pot in the hamburgers. Did they check out the FF place??,2933,227858,00.html (thats the pot one)

  • Honestly NO I don't think she was. There are many things that could cause a tox report to come up that way while the person is clean.
