Should my 3 year old see a professional?

My son who will be 4 in September has invented an imaginary friend. Completely normal, I know, but looking at his life, I wonder if he is going through something emotionally. We are a military family and we just moved to this new duty station in March. He has seen so many family members and friends come to visit and then go home and I'm wondering if he is having a rough time with it. I'm just not sure what to do. His "friend" is a whale and his name is Whale. This friend sleeps in his bed with him and is generally involved in every aspect of our son's day. Kinda freaking out :)

  • Its a child! Not even 4 yrs old! Let him use his imagination and have a "friend". It's not like his "friend" tells your boy to do bad things.

This is tough because he hasn't met any friends in this new area yet. He has normal relationships with everyone around him though, plays with other kids at the mall play place, etc. Does that count?!

  • I wouldn't worry. My nephew had an imaginary friend and my son has one name Robot Pup. As long as it doesn't interfere with school or other friends, I wouldn't worry.

  • I'm concerned about my son's emotional well being, please don't be rude, its a completely legitimate concern.

  • It's completely normal, and I think I remember hearing somewhere that imaginary friends are a sign of intelligence.

  • Thanks ladies, that helps. I'm hoping it isn't his way of compensating for the friends and family that he misses from back home. Any thoughts on that?
