  • I was told I could start after we'd started solids, and to use the same rule as baby food - nothing new for a few days, if they had a new food hold off on a new juice for a few days, and vice-versa. None of my kids really liked juice til they were older though.

I did, with doctor's "orders", try pear juice for DS when he was about 3 months old, as he had constipation issues his first year - it didn't help.

  • I think my kids started on them between 4 and 6 months depending on the kid. My oldest had some constipation and belly issues, so light watered down apple juice helped him early... With the other I think we waited longer cause he didn't need it.

  • Remember too, you don't have to give juice! I would start with water and let juice be a treat. They only recommend 4 oz a day for small children anyway. If your child is used to water, that won't be a big deal. I am amazed at how many moms here on cafemom ask questions like, "How do I get my child to drink water." Start with the water and wait to introduce the juice! (I think my kids had their first taste around 9 months - but even now we only have juice about once a month).

  • My son's doctor said personally, she didn't give her own kids juice until they were over 2. She said I could start giving my son juice at 9 months if I wanted to. I rarely do, and he's 10 months. If he ever has it, it's heavily diluted with water.

  • Water in small amounts in a sippy with solids meals once you start. Juice can be after that, but it's not necessary.

  • Once you start solids you can start juice and water. Small amounts in a cup with meals :)

  • I wouldn't do juice. Juice is all the sugar with none of the benefits of the fruit. Others are right, water is sufficient. No need to start a juice habit.

  • We were told not to start juice until well into toddlerhood. We gave DS juice at 3 yrs old and at 5 he prefers water to juice everytime. We just got back from the doctor's office where they again stated that juice is a special treat and not to be given on a regular basis. The doctor was happy in our son's lack of juice intake.
