When did your children stop taking naps?

DS's are 5.5 and 4.5
I'm contemplating getting rid of DS1's nap when he turns 6. They take about a 2 hour nap everyday. I thought we'd get to a point where they'd just stop taking naps ...but so far they pretty much always nap. I don't want to rush DS1 ...but idk. It would be kinda nice if he could stop taking naps.

Thoughts?

  • I think that's a good idea too. I just think a bit of quiet time, doing whatever, has such a calming effect on the atmosphere of the home & keeps it from getting too chaotic & crazy.

  • I could no longer get my son to sleep at nap time when he was about 4.5. However, he still has 1 hour of quiet time in his room most everyday. He can read, sleep, or sometimes watch an educational DVD.

  • My 2 older kids, now 25 & 19, took naps from 1-3PM every day until they turned 5. We now have a 3 & a 4 year old & they are napping the same time & will continue to do so until they are 5. As they get older, if they don't actually sleep, I don't worry too much. I'm happy if they just get a book & lay quietly & read for a while. Seems they just need that little extra rest time when they're so active through the day, otherwise, they tend to get a bit cranky later in the evening. Once they turn 5, it's up to them if they want to continue to take naps. We home school, so we can always set aside an hour or so for some quiet time through the day.

  • My kids generally stopped taking naps anywhere between 3 years and 6 years. Each 1 was different but my youngest two kids are 4yrs. & 8yrs. and every once in a while they will take a nap if they are really wiped out! Good Luck!

  • we homeschool too.
and i was thinking it would be nice to do an hour of quiet school time instead of nap, seeing as he's getting older and what not.
