How can I get my 3 year old to listen?

Have had a lot of problems with parenting my daughter. My spouse has been out of town for the last year. He comes home at a minimum of twice a month, so I am kind of on my own for now. I need reasonable effective options other than spanking.

  • I have a 3-year-old myself... When she's acting up, I try to eliminate distractions: turn off the TV, get down to her eye-level, hold her hand so she's focused on me, talk calmly. It doesn't always work completely, but at least I'm not ending up screaming at her! :-) When she just WON'T listen, I send her to her room & tell her I'll talk to her when she can calm down. Usually she'll come out to me within 5 minutes or so saying "I'm ready to talk now, Mama!" Most of the time she has on a big grin, too! Good luck!

  • Time outs, take stuff away.

  • Spanking is not an option for a 3 year old, so I don't blame you there, but a 3 year old should know right from wrong by now. Use time-out techniques or maybe place him/her in their room until the behavior is better.

  • When my 3 y/o is having a hardtime listening i talk to him in a firm voice and make sure he's making eye contact.

  • Thanks for the input. My daughter can scream for an hour. She will leave her room multiple times. She tells me she hates me, hits and kicks me. She has a very strong will, which is a mixed blessing.
