Ok, I need help from the mama's that can cook, lol....

We're making spaghetti and put in a can of shitake mushrooms that were apparently packed in salt because now the sauce is super salty. Do you know of any way to counteract the saltiness? Anything that can be added to help?

Thanks in advance. It's actually my husband who's making it, and he wasn't sure if anything could help, and I was like, "I'll ask on Cafemom. If there is an answer we'll get one", lol.

  • I have never tried it, but I have heard that putting a half potato into soup or sauce will help absorb extra salt. You can also just add a ton more sauce until it isn't too salty anymore, and freeze the extra :) Spaghetti sauce freezes well.

  • add a whole peeled potato - it will soak up a lot of the salt. then just remove it before serving.

  • Drop a chunk of raw potato in it while it is cooking.

  • If the potato doesn't work or you don;t have one, try adding some Parmesan cheese, to "mask" the saltiness.

  • Usually adding sugar will help counteract the salty taste.
