how can i get more milk?

I've been pumping 7-8 times a day and I still feel as if my milk is low. I make approximately 1 ounce per hour. We had to go the bottle route due to constant fighting during meal time and frustration on both our parts. She also has acid reflux and throws up most of her meals if she isn't sitting up for at least 30 minutes after each feeding. No matter how long I pump or how often I can't get more than 24 ounces in one 24 hour period. I'm starting work again soon and I will need some reserves... but I can't seem to get more than an ounce ahead. Please Help!!

  • 24 ounces is actually her daily need... Mother's Milk Tea is available at MANY stores but the health food store is your best bet.

  • Don't give up on getting the baby to re-latch. It will be worth the effort. see getting baby back to breast/HELP my baby won't nurse! then visit visit exclusive pumping Also take time to go to Dr. Jack Newman

Then learn how to pump more efficiently by going here: http://newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/MaxProduction.html PUmping is very difficult because no pump is as good as a baby.

  • Some women just can't get production when they pump. I couldn't but my baby was able to get milk fine. I was convinced that I was not making enough milk with my oldest. I even got a prescription for Reglan....and I still couldn't get any production from pumping.

  • Forgot to mention...you can try fenugreek which is an herbal supplement (sold at GNC and similar places). I've also heard that drinking malta and eating oatmeal helps with supply.

  • Drink the Mothers Milk tea made with fenugreek or take the fenugreek capsules. Drink plenty of fluids and eat good food regularly. Keep pumping and trying to relatch. Some women need silence and a picture or intense concentration on their little one to make milk. Are you relaxed?

  • Yeah, I'm usually not into herbal remedies, but I will vouch for the Mothers Milk tea; it did increase my milk production.

  • This is what worked for me when I was having supply issues:

    Nurse frequently
Drink lots of water, at least 6 oz every time you nurse and every time you pump
Have lots of skin-to-skin contact with your baby
    Take brewers yeast tabs
Look at pictures of your baby while you pump
Wait at least an hour after nursing to pump.

  • Have you had a visit with a lactation consultant? I could never get much from pumping, but all 5 of my babies got plenty from breastfeeding.
