Renting out a room

What do I need to know (laws, forms, etc) to rent out a room in my house? Thanks!

  • As sweet... mentioned, check out your local municipality as each one has different regulations. A couple we know got into hot water as they shared a house with two other (unrelated) people. Some places don't want you to rent rooms at all.

  • Try googling a copy of a lease....and read through it....make sure you make copies for you and them, that should be it...and anything you can think of PUT IN IT!!! damages, late fees, early move outs...pest control....ANYTHING!!!

  • You might want to check with the city or county where you live to see what their regulations/laws are. They might need to come out and check fire safety etc and get a permit. Check with your home owners insurance too. Good luck!
