Home alone

At what age did you feel comfortable leaving your child(ren) home alone? I know a mom who has a 7 year old boy and twin 5 year old girls ... what age is appropriate (depending on kid's maturity/responsibility I know) - to leave them alone after school for 30-40 minutes?

  • 12 or 13. There are laws on this. You should check your state http://www.latchkey-kids.com/latchkey-kids-age-limits.htm

  • Back when I was a single parent I had to leave my kids home alone when they were well 6,8, 12 and they had rules and knew what to do and what not to do. I feel guilty for leaving them home so much but had to work and had no other choice.

  • When the kid is either in Junior High School or High School. Too much can happen with children younger than that.

  • No one should leave their children home alone until they are in Middle School at the earliest and even that would be frightful to me. There are laws and each state is different. But 11 or 12 is the absolute youngest kids should be home alone.

  • I was left alone and in charge of my much younger brother at 9, for several hours a day. My son will probably be much much older than that. It all depends on the child in question and the laws in that state. Your example would be far too young in any case IMO.
