Help with recipe categories please?

I'm getting serious with my recipes. I have a recipe box and plenty of cookbooks but they haven't been used in YEARS. I love the 3 ring binder idea I've been given so I'm reorganizing!

That said... the categories I've used are listed below. Are they "normal" or is there a better way to categorize? Am I missing anything? Help please!!!

Beverages
Breads
Cakes/Cookies
Casseroles
Desserts/Puddings
Frostings/Fillings
Ice Cream/Candy
Meats
Miscellaneous
Pies
Salads/Dressings/Soups
Sauces

  • In mine I have those general ones, and separate categories for side dishes and appetizers, plus one for breakfast (and if it's a breakfast casserole type thing it goes there instead of casseroles, or things like cinnamon rolls would be there instead of bread). I figure I may make breakfast for dinner, but it's not likely that if I'm looking for breakfast ideas I'll want to look through every section that might have them. Then in each category that may have meat included, I divide it into two sections, one with the meatless recipes, another with the rest.

  • I usually give cookies and cakes their own section since I have many recipes for them. Additionally I break meats category into subcategories since there are more than one kind of meat like chicken, beef, lamb, fish, steak, pork, etc.

  • Silly Flaming Softserve.... it is your own PERSONAL preferences that counts.... organize them the way you feel is most convenient to you. I have a three ring binder called "Institute Meal Ideas" and I have my stuff arranged by weekly menus with shopping lists! Oh ya, I am that sick.... I have a section on "Holiday Ideas" by season... I actually did it almost like a scrapbook because many of the recipes are cut from magazines. Ones that are online or in my computer simply have a pictures and a notation where to find them! Good Luck....happy organizing...
