Are one of your children going away to college next month? What kind of stuff should they make sure to have for thier dorm?

The oldest is going away to college..not too far..only about 3 hours away.
What are some essentials he will need?

  • It depends on what amenities the dorm has. A fridge is a must, and a microwave is nice, but they usually have a few in the common areas.

You will need bedding, most dorms are twin x-longs. They are hard to find, other than late summer, so I would get two sets and a couple sets of sheets, and since you are only 3 hours away. You will probably want to keep the extra set at your house, and just send them with two sets of sheets and only one comforter. They need a bathroom caddy for shampoo, conditioner, razors, soap, a loofah, etc, and a few pair of rubber flip flops that they can wear in the shower.

They need a computer, printer, school supplies including printer paper and extra ink cartridges, an alarm clock, a bulletin/dry erase board, some under-bed storage, and clothes.

Space is at a premium, so it would also be wise, to only take one season of clothes with you at a time, esp. since you live so close.

  • A fan was essential in my dorm room. Other than that, all I can really remember are the obvious necessities of bedding, towels, etc. And in my dorm we had to bring our own fridge, microwave, etc. so these are good things to coordinate with any roommates since no dorm has room for multiples of these things. And space is usually so tight so packing with a less is more approach is helpful. Good luck!

  • Have you seen his room?My oldest two attended different colleges and though close in price the rooms were totally different.Do you have a way to meet online his roommate? In one dorm they needed their own microwave & minifrig. We were able to figure this out on line with the roommate during the summer. His own sheets & towels. Is it suite bath or a hall bath?.Oh ya if he has expensive electronics ,& they all do ,look into replacement value dorm insurance. Two suites down in my daughters dorm in the second week a brand new for school ┬álap top ,ipod & more were stolen. The door was accidentally left unlocked ,it could be a resident or a visitor.Leave time & $ for a Target trip once there.Hope he has a great year!!.

  • My youngest leaves for college in 2 weeks and he and his room mate have already met and talked about what who is bringing. My son is in charge of providing the small fridge and the TV (both of which we already have) plus he's bringing his alarm clock, fan, bedding, lamp, towels and trash can from home. He doesn't need much else aside from the usual bath products, shaving necessties & toothpaste and tooth brush & all of his clothes will fit in the dresser in his dorm room so he doesn't need a closet organier. He and his room mate are going to raise the beds and put their desk areas under their beds. The school provides the laptops & printers (well, it's put in to the cost of tuition). School supplies will vary depending on your child's classes. Microwaves in the dorm rooms are against the rules, check to see if they are against the rules at your student's dorm.
