  • There's a plate in there that compacts it every block or so - when it's getting full they hit a button and it's compressed very tightly. Our whole town fits in 1 truck.

  • As other have said they are compacter trucks compacting the garbage as they are picking it up.

  • My SO's brother is a garbage man... It is my understanding that they have a compactor that smashes the garbage on the truck. It is also my understanding that the garbage trucks do make several trips a day back to the station to empty their trucks and then return to where they were on their route.

  • A garbage truck is just a trash compactor on wheeles

  • The guys who ride up front that you never see are always hungry. There's a square opening between the cab of the truck and the back, so when the compactor squishes all the trash to the front of the truck, the guys just reach in and pull out what they can find in leftovers. Helps to make more room for more trash. :)
    Bon apetite!
