Why is everyone wanting to drill our own oil?

Why is everyone wanting to drill our own oil? I think drilling theres is the smart thing to do. Say we save our oil and use theres for another 5 or 10 years, well if we save ours then we will have ours then, but if we drill ours now what will we use when ours is gone. Why is everyone wanting to drill our own oil? is there a good reason?

  • I agree we new technology and we need the funding to implement what is already there. However, there are oil fields in the west that were abandoned AND still have oil---they are not dry. Plus, there are refineries close by. My FIL worked in these oil fields. He believes that you could get some of them up and running fairly quickly. Now he and I disagree--I believe that buys us time to get other options into place----he feels we can live forever.

We need to be independant for our energy needs AND find ways to not destroy the Earth at the same time. Why can't we have a "hybrid" program until alternatives are universal?

  • We want to drill our own oil so we are not so dependent on the Middle East.

  • I dont understand this even if we start now drlling it will still take many years to find oil then to get it out and in the mean time it could take 10 or more years we are still depending on the middle east And still not looking at other alternatives what will we do when ther oil runs out?? It may not but what if do we leave that to our kids to deal with too??? There is more ways than just oil...

  • Yes, it will take 10 years to refine the fuel. And they would have spent billions of dollars and the CEO's will be off in retirement in their vacation mansion enjoying the good life while we are all paying for 8.00/gallon for gasoline. We need to develop alternative fuel sources & demand that the car industry sell cars that have a higher MPG. Did you know that you could pay to convert your vehicle and get about 80 MPG? If an average American did it, then don't you think that the car manufacturer who has the engineers/resources could have done this a long time ago? Yes, but they don't want to. Also, our gov't could pass regulation that requires all new buildings and new homes to have solar panels and special energy saving equipment. This would decrease the energy use. They could give out rebates for this or loans for homeowners to convert. We should be fighting for this. This is a battle that we can win.

  • So... if it takes 5 or 10 years to find it we should wait? That's just ridiculous! It will take 5 or 10 years in 5 or 10 years. I don't understand NOT drilling.

  • i say we drill and find an alternative energy source ,so if we deplete our supply we have a back up plan ,and then we wont have to depend on the middle east

  • There are alot of reasons and having a bil in the oil field i don't think we will be running out of oil anytime soon. there is enough to last at least the next 100 yrs or so. We are paying was more for gas then we would if we were using our own. If you wanna keep paying $3.50-$4.00gal. for gas fine with me but i really don't want to.

  • So it takes 10 years....in 10 years we can be less dependant or in the exact same position we are now. Do you want to work for something better, or just keep bitching because it's all the same? Yes we need alternatives to natural oil and gas...but that is way down the future as well, and you have to have something in the meantime.

  • Hello? What kind question is that? Why do we want to keep paying Chaves, Putin and other countries who literally hate America and everything we stand for? Do you realize any one of those countries can stop selling or prevent us from getting (Iran for instance) the oil we use? Your gas prices would immediately double and keep going up from there if that happened. We have the oil and it will not take 10 years to find a drop. We can have new oil refined in 2-3 yrs in some cases. While doing that we need to research Wind, clean coal, electric and Nuclear solutions to help us become energy independant.
