  • I always recommend walking / driving around the neighborhood before you decide.  Make sure to do so at different parts of the day to see what type of area it truly is.  Go in the AM, afternoon (after school time),  6pm, and 11pm and during different parts of the week as well, mid week and weekend.  Also speak to people in the area that you encounter and ask their opinion of the area.  Good Luck!

  • You can look up crime statistics by zip code on places such as city-data.com or you can google "crime statistics by zipcode" and find other places to get information as well.

Statistics can give you a good overview of what type of crime happens in an area. Don't let it replace the "drive through" experience though. You definitely want to familiarize yourself with how you feel in an area and not just rely on statistics.

  • You can see if the police reports are published online or in the local newspaper. I'd do a Megan's Law search too. But, rule of thumb, more people = more crime. The farther out you live the in the country, the less likely there will be crime activity.
