1 Bump

not even 3 yet and not napping?

my son will be 3 in october. we had a few weeks where he took about an hour (or 2!) to fall asleep for his nap, so then he would fall asleep around 2 and sleep until 5. of course then he wouldn't be ready to fall asleep in the evening at a decent time. we realized the days that he doesn't nap he falls asleep very well at night. he will get a little grumpy in the evening but not as bad as napless days were when he was slightly younger.

so now we are faced with dropping naps altogether so that he actually is tired when bedtime rolls around, or keep trying to make him nap when he's not tired until later in the afternoon, and then he's not tired at night!

so we decided to drop naps, but i wondered if anyone else's child stopped napping so soon. i was really hoping he would nap for at least another year or so.

btw, i work full time 1st shift and DH works 33 hrs per week 2nd shift

  • My daughter stopped taking a nap around your sons age. We did quiet time where she had to be in her room with a book or so for an hour. Sometimes I got lucky and she would end up falling asleep!

  • I had trouble with keeping my 3yo daughter in bed at night. She was constantly getting up, playing and wouldn't stay in bed. Then I read that dropping naps helps them stay in bed at night. So we dropped her naps. She was nap free for about a week and it worked, she stayed in bed at night, but then she started becoming a major pill. Whining, throwing fits, screaming and just being plain mean. I knew she needed her naps, but didn't know what to do since she wasn't staying in bed at night. So now we alternate nap days. She gets a nap on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's. We haven't had a problem since and she's been well behaved.

  • My girl is just about to turn 3. She still naps, though not every day.

Regardless, I read her a story and tuck her in every day, if she doesn't fall asleep within an hour, I'll go get her...and at least she's had some quiet restful time (usually with a book).

  • Dd will be 3 in November and has been back and forth with naps! She first started refusing them at 21 mos! Then on certain days she would nap... Now however, she falls asleep around 8-10 and wakes up and hour later!!!! She stays up until 3-4 AM and yes, I wake her up between 8-9!!! She delays her naps as long as she can but won't stay asleep!!! I don't think 3 is too young to drop naps, mine needs to!!! Lmao
