What is the strangest substitute ingredient you have used in a recipe?

Okay, so the other night I was making Hamburger Helper and realized I was out of milk.

I got to thinking... I used FORMULA! lol

No-one could even tell! But it gave me the giggles so bad I had to tell my SO. He wasn't grossed out like I thought he would be! lol

So what is the strangest ingredient you have used as a substitute before?

  • I was making sugar cookies and the recipe called for sour cream. We didn't have any in the house, so I substituted ranch dressing (I was thinking that it had a like consistency). The cookies tasted just like ranch dressing, it was so gross!

  • When I was a senior in High School I made brownies that called for Green Creme de Menthe. I wasn't going to put alcohol in my brownies so I added almond flavoring. I had NO IDEA how it was going to turn out but it was better than trying banana or strawberry flavoring. Turns out it was a big hit!!

  • I've used corn flakes and oatmeal as a substitute for bread crumbs. That's not as weird as formula though! :)

  • Hoisin sauce. I wanted to make something more spicy and less bland and I decided to use something I've hardly used. I surprised myself and it came out quite good.

  • LOL@ at the formula. That's great! I don't cook often, and if I do, I don't stray from the recipe, so I'm not sure what mine would be. :)
