At what age should kids be totally responsible for their personal care(w/o checking them)?

I don't know why but my kids are pretty messy and don't seem to care at all about hygene.
At what age do you think kids should be "on their own?"

  • When they are out of your house. My daughter is very ficle with that.

    I insist brush your teeth, put on deodorant, I believe it is pure laziness.
    My new line is you must look Fabulous before you walk out the door...

    My son Handsome, he is 6 and washes his face, brushes his teeth and if we are running late at night, he says;

    I have to take a bath. Each kids is diffrent... Just don't give up.. I am not.

  • I assumed all kids did this by age 5. My girl has herself dressed, teeth brushed, hair brushed all on her own. She asks me almost every night to run her bath water (sticky knob or she could do it herself). She's done this since just before age 4. I would have started enforcing it at 6 if she hadn't done it on her own. Other than hygiene, I'd say most moms always checkup on their kids. I'm almost 27 and my mom still calls "just to check".

  • Probably age 18 or so. Heck, even adults get lazy about hygene. You are a mom forever. Deal with it. :)

  • I believe that by age four they should be wiping themselves effectively, but six, they should be able to dress, brush hair and teeth on their own and by ten they should be able to remember to take a shower with out being told to do so.

  • when they move out of my house - until then I will tell them if they need to shower or what not and if they don't they will get in trouble.

  • We still have to remind my 22 yo! Maybe if he had a girlfriend he would be better.

  • I don't know if there is an age for everyone. My mom still calls to make sure that I made it home okay from places, etc. If I'm sick, she comes over to help me out.

  • Oh, you're referring to just hygiene, lol. Oops. Hmmm...I think that when they're a teenager they should be able to take care of their own personal hygiene completely by themselves, in most cases.

  • I'm glad to see these answers. My son is 15 and would never brush his teeth or shower if we didn't make him.

  • My daughter is pretty self sufficient without me having to say much of anything at 14. My 13 & 15 year old boys on the other hand, I have to ask them if they brushed their teeth. It's like the weekend comes and they forget to shower. Its like dude, soap and water is an everyday love affair man get used to it. But to answer your questions, moms never ever really give up any of their duties EVER... LOL!!!
