I use black beans, garbanzo beans, lentils, split peas in recipes a lot and I was thinking that they could be good high fiber, high protein finger food for my daughter but wasn't sur eif it would be good to give her or not. Plain, no salt or anything. Has anyone given their baby foods like these? She's 7 months old.

  • My only advice is to just give her a bit to start out with because they can be hard on the tummy and sometimes they come out the way they went in if you know what I mean. But if she does well with a few to start then I say go for it. My DD enjoys black beans and they are so healthy as you said.

  • Cooked beans are a great finger food, though some babies get gassy from them; I would wait until she is about 10 months old. You may want to add a bit of baking soda to the pot when you cook beans.

The canned beans can be very high in sodium so rinse well before giving to baby.

  • Mine always loved them, but we didn't start any solids until closer to a year. When they were old enough to eat real foods, and feed their self.

  • My older 2 kids LOVED beans, especially refried veggie black beans. All I really did was open a can and spoon them into their little mouths. Now they love all sorts - black, lentils, garbanzo, kidney.
