question about dry puppy skin

we adopted an abandoned lab mix puppy. he, his mom, and sisters were dropped off at a closed harley shop. the people who rescued him took him to the vet, where he was deemed healthy and has recieved his first 2 sets of shots. however, he was absolutely covered in fleas and ticks. he was treated and doesnt have any anymore, but his skin is so dry and bumpy and he is missing patches of hair from where they were infested on him. we are giving him oatmeal baths and spraying a dog hydrocortisone spray on him, but it doesnt seem to be working. he doesnt go back to the vet til the 17th. any ideas?

  • Has the puppy been check for lice, mange, or ringworm? Does he have a skin infection causing the bumps and is he getting more of them. When dogs get ticks attached to them, they can get an infectioin at the bite site but you would not bee seeing any more new bumps. What diet are you feeding him? Is he scratcing? I would call the vet's office and talk to them and I would take him back if he is getting worse.

  • Oatmeal is good for the skin. But there are also other types of pet shampoo you can try.

Any of those should do well.

  • Hi - your vet is doing the usual care that he/she can offer -  natural supplements can be the answer for this little one.  Also, a good oil added to his food each day.

Pure Salmon oil ( one teaspoon ) will be a great addition for his skin and coat.

  • You can try a product from Nilodor. I had a German Shepard whose skin was always dry and I used their shampoos and it worked. I spent tons of money on shampoo's for him and nothing worked. Use the Banana/Oatmeal. It smells great and it's a wonderful product.
