Patraeus doubles down on rules of engagement, right way to go?

In his first tactical directive since assuming command of international forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus doubled down on the orders imposed by his predecessor that put a premium on protecting civilians first to win their support. For months those rules of engagement, formulated by General Stanley McChrystal, have led to rank-and-file grumblings by U.S. soldiers. The servicemen say that the strict rules put them in greater danger, even as they aim to avoid civilian casualties. The grumbling is unlikely to diminish with the new directives that Petraeus issued on Wednesday.

  • Messier and messier. This war, like Iraq, has been a big giant FAIL. There is no clear resolution, and it only has served to kill people and create serious problems, besides the damage to infrastructure which we will surely be paying for, whether we "win" (whatever that would mean) or lose. Just a big, expensive killing machine.

Pissing off our troops because they feel they can't defend themselves, pissing of the Afghan people, contributing to the rise of extremism.

    I'm gonna go cry now.

  • It is amazing how well our military can perform when blindfolded and handcuffed.

I think the war has been a disaster as well. We should have gone in and taken care of business to begin with.......you can't do this and have things all politically correct though. We should have gone in and leveled a few places and demanded a white flag and Bin Laden. If we didn't get them we should had leveled a few more places. Pussyfooting around doesn't accomplish anything.

  • I agree with Carpy.

Trying to make a war pretty is a waste of time and lives. The point of a war is to kill all the bad guys or scare everyone enough that they shut up. Walking on eggshells and asking someone if it's okay before you shoot them isn't an effective strategy.

If we don't want engage in a war we should bring our soldiers home instead of wasting thier talent and lives on nation building that isn't working and never will.

  • Kinda proves my point that we are wasting our time in this war. If you want the job done you do it right. Wars kill and that's all there is to it. This will only cause more US military deaths.

  • The renewed call for a disciplined use of force - plus added restrictions - were not what most troops were hoping for. Over the past year a series of directives issued by McChrystal limited air strikes and hot pursuit in populated areas. This managed to reduce civilian casualties caused by NATO forces, pleasing Afghan officials and rights group But many war fighters contend the current policies have handicapped their ability to effectively take on the Taliban, a guerrilla force that doesn't have to play by the same rules. There's also been widespread uncertainty over how troops can defend themselves when under attack

The only reason this is an issue is because we invaded two countries that did not attack us
