My daughter is starting 1st grade this sept and She can recognize a few words from her spelling list from kindergarten, but she's far rom reading an "easy" book without help. SHe did start kinder a year early (she is 5 years old), and her grades were very good. So did your child know how to ready by the time he/she started 1st grade?Answer Question

I teach first grade, and I have a few who come in knowing how to read pretty well. A majority of them can only pick up a few sight words coming in. They learn to become more fluent readers as the year goes on.
