Did your child now how to ready by the 1st grade?

My daughter is starting 1st grade this sept and She can recognize a few words from her spelling list from kindergarten, but she's far rom reading an "easy" book without help. SHe did start kinder a year early (she is 5 years old), and her grades were very good. So did your child know how to ready by the time he/she started 1st grade?

  • My daughter could read easy words going into kindergarten. In kindergarten she learned how to read everything. She could read easy chapter books going into first grade (Betsy books, Junie B Jones). She is quite advanced. My son learned to read easy books in Kindergarten.

  • Yes, he could read as well as me after kindergarten. I wasn't sure until he picked up the globe and asked me "What is Afghanistan?" I knew without a doubt he read just fine.

  • Simple words like NO, Yes, I, like, etc but NOT consistently. Sometimes she had them sometimes he did not. She is still struggling, but we have since learn that she has convergence insufficiency and may also be dyslexic. Even though she can do and understand most concepts at her grade level and will often times read just fine and at grade level, she is not consistent. Therefore she's at 1st-2nd grade level in reading even though she will be "entering" into 3rd grade.

  • If you are concerned that she's not academically ready, you should try calling your school and ask about having her tested. In our district, they have a 1st-grade readiness test because Kindergarten in not mandatory in my state. So if a parent did not enroll the child in k-garten at 5, the child can be tested at 6 to see if k-garten or first grade is more appropriate. Perhaps your district has something like that...it wouldn't hurt to find out so you can make sure she's where she needs to be. Good luck!

  • My son was reading pretty well by first grade. I know a lot of children that struggled a bit at first, but then caught up with everyone else quickly.

  • I teach first grade, and I have a few who come in knowing how to read pretty well. A majority of them can only pick up a few sight words coming in. They learn to become more fluent readers as the year goes on.

  • Yes. She really loved being able to figure out the words and by the end of kinder, was definitely reading the early reader books. My other child is not that old yet, so we shall see.
