  • We each have our own accounts. I would highly recommend having your own account because there is a maximum that you can contribute each year depending on various factors.

  • Each woman should have her own separate retirement account. If you are married, it is considered part of the marital estate anyway.

  • I'm the only one who has one right now. And only because it's my 401K through my employer.

  • I have my own Roth IRA.

Answer by Christina807 at 11:20 PM on Aug. 6, 2010

  • I have my own Roth IRA as well. My neighbor got divorced and her husband is supposed to give her half his 401K and he hasn't yet. They've been divorced for 3 years...
Anyway that's not why we have separate ones. I mean it would be easier- if something were to happen to him. But like Sherri said there is a max that you can contribute as an individual. So both spouses have to have one if you want to put the full amount in. Does that make any sense?

Also he'll have access to it 5 years sooner than I will since he is 5 years older. So it seemed wise to us to split it.
