  • so that it's more accurate

and also not to waste time if you're just a day or 2 late, your period could still come.

  • What DarkFaery said:)

  • Because it's not uncommon for someone to be a week or two late and not be pregnant, and as DarkFaery131 said the tests are more accurate.

  • Also, I meant to say that a lot of women don't keep accurate track of their periods, and may think they're late, but aren't, so doctors prefer to wait until at least 2 weeks after a missed period.

  • Most doctors will do a pelvic exam on your first visit. We older women were told not to come in until after we had missed two periods. By that time, the uterus is enlarged enough they actually tell by feeling that you are pregnant. I never had a pregnancy test in my life.

  • well back in the day.....for lots of reasons. Not sure why they wait now...but it used to be because
many women were not exactly sure of their dates and time and money was often wasted on negative results
tests were often serum tested in the office rather than urine because a serum result could give qualitative and quantitative results
many miscarriages often occur during this time and are thought of as just an odd period

  • Because you can be late for reasons other than being pregnant. Stress can make you late and so can being sick during certain times in your cycle.

  • The pregnancy hormone is not detectable at six weeks it is 8 weeks! That is the soonest that the HCG pregnancy hormone can be detected.

  • Get the pregnancy hormone to be built up higher.. miscarriages usually happen around that time so its wasteful to have people that are just a day or two late rushing into the doctors for pregancy tests.
