my 14 month old

So we are convinced that our 14 month old son has a problem with milk....every time he has a cup of milk that night he throws up and starts to have diarrhea...we have not talked to the dr about it yet but he will be going soon...in the mean time I have bought him some stage 2 soy formula(which I honestly didn't think he would drink....) just so that he can still get the vitamins and nutrients from the milk and not get sick...my question is how much should I let him have a day?? He drinks a lot of water and juice too.

  • 4 oz of juice a day only, all the water he wants, and At that age, I served a cup of milk with every meal and snack.

  • He should drink mostly water, very little juice and really doesn't even need milk of any kind as long as he has lots of veggies in his diet. Does he eat yogurt or cheese at all? If so, then no need for milk or formula. They only need 16 oz of dairy max.

  • 24-32 ounces a day of either formula, soy milk, or whole milk is most any pediatricians recommendation. No more than 32 ounces. =)

  • He can have as much soy milk/formula has he would have normal milk. They need at least 1.5 cups of milk or milk alternatives a day. Make sure it's got vitamin D in it, or look into a supplement.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't force a 14 month old to have any milk or formula as long as they're eating enough other food that they're getting sufficient nutrition.

If he's lactose intolerant, he might tolerate yogurt or cheese better. You'd still get about the same nutritional value but might have less stomach problems from it. (My husband is lactose intolerant, milk and icecream, etc make him SICK, but he tolerates yogurt and cheese better (sharper is better for him).)

  • after breast milk our kids get water. we usually do 1 cup of juice a week, and it is diluted until they are 3 or 4.
we encourage green food. the only yogurt we eat is organic, because there are not food colorings or artificial flavorings or sweetners. we do cheese, but we don 't consider it healthy food. as far as calcium goes, our bodies get it easier from veggies than from cows milk. i think (you will find out soon) that a lot of kids with milk allergies will also have soy allergies as well.
    good luck mama!
    food intolerances are not easy!
