Anyone have a chameleon for a pet?

My youngest daughter (11) has decided she really wants one. Are they hard to care for? What do you feed them?

  • Chameleons are very hard to care for and expensive to set up. They eat bugs, typically crickets and mealworms, but you also have to give supplements. When I worked in a pet shop years ago I set up a large terrarium for two Jackson's Chameleons and I spent about $200 with all the rocks, climbing vines, and other stuff. They have to have just the right amount of humidity, a set temperature, and they get stressed out really easily until they are settled in. I would suggest doing a LOT of research. There are a lot of great forums out there for lizards/reptiles that can give you good info. They are really cool pets, but not for everyone.
