  • It's less about how it's calculated and more about how well he hides his money in some cases. If he makes ten K a month, I'm wondering about rental properties paid in cash and tucked away in a shoe box...

  • if he's self employed he can only "predict" how much he makes in the future, if he decides he predicts he'll be low income than he will be low income to the courts, after he files his taxes, if he choses to, they will see how much he really makes and adjust accordingly. But he does have 10 years to file if he doesn't owe and he won't be penalized unless he does owe, so thats a toughy.

    OR

    if he has a lot of expenses, like a high mortgage, that goes into the category of cost of living so they will deduct that from his income to make his net gain
