School Night Bedtime

We're have a disagreement about this in my house, and it needs to be settled by the end of the week so we can start school night routines. My 10 yo thinks he should stay up until 10 (no way). Dh thinks 9:30 is ok, and I think 9 p.m. What do you think?

*Note to consider: He will be waking up no later than 6:45 a.m. for school*

  • Kids his age should have atleast 10 to 11 hours of sleep. If he's the type of child that goes to sleep once his head hits the pillow and doesn't have a hard time getting up in the mornings, then 9:00/9:30 should be considered...if he's the type that has a hard time falling asleep, and its hard to get him up then I would make it 8:30 a.m.

  • Our kids all go to bed btwn. 7:30pm-8:00pm; normally they are up at 6:30am. We homeschool year-around and like to start early for the most part.

  • my ds is 9 1/2 (10 in November) and he goes to bed at 8:30. Last year it was 8:00, and he petitioned for a later bedtime. I agreed to 8:30 on the condition that if I have a hard time getting him out of bed we go back to 8:00

  • When I was 10, my bedtime was 8pm. I didn't get to go to bed at 9pm until I was in 10th grade. I hated it. I think 9pm is PERFECT for your 10 y/o. If he doesn't like it, tell him he is lucky that he didn't have parents like mine!

  • My son is 10 and same as last year..I plan on this year being a bedtime of 9:00 pm as well.
My son NEEDS that amount of sleep and so far, he hasnt tried making a deal with me on the times or changing the time so I'm going to let it be.
In your case, maybe you can compromise by seeing how he does with 9:15 or 9:30...that way its not a big family feud over it.If he does well..then thats good, if not..go back to 9 pm.
    Good Luck
can't wait till school starts back!!! :)

  • My 9 and 10 (and 12) year old both go to bed at 8:30, although they can read in their beds until 9. They get up at 7 for school.

  • My now 13 yr old had a 9pm bedtime at 10 but ONLY if he wasn't being a pill about getting up in the morning or wasn't cranky at night.

  • My kids get up by 6.30 and are in bed by 8pm-they are 12, 9 and 6.

  • I was about to suggest 8:30 since even though I put my kids to bed at a set bed time it took time for them to really settle in and actually go to sleep. And every child needs a certain amount of sleep to not be grouchy in the morning from being up too late. It depends upon your child.
