What works best for washing cloth pocket diapers and inserts?

I just started cloth and we are using one size pocket diapers. I love them!! I just dont know what the best and cheapest way to wash them? Alot of people say to use "Free and Clear" type detergents but the manufactuer says not to use those. What works well for you that doesnt leave a residue?

  • i invested in a bag of rockin' green. It is amazing. it costs a bit (I searched the internet and $15 was the cheapest I found). It is good for 45-90 loads. It is amazing. I visited my parents house for a week and was using a free and clear detergent- when I got home and washed my diapers in the rockin' green it was amazing how much excess crap came out of them... for me, it was well worth the investment and I highly recommend the rockin' green detergent!!

  • I use soap nuts. They, IMO, are the best for washing anything and are GREAT for cloth diapers. Just google it and you'll find tons of info on them. I rarely use regular detergent anymore. Good luck!

  • I just ordered a box of the bum genius detergent from I haven't tried it yet, but it gets really good reviews. Until now I have been using Planet. I do know:
    Detergents to stay away from:
    Any Baby Detergents
    Any Free & Clear Detergents
Any Detergents that contain chlorine bleach

These are supposed to be good:
    Rockin' Green Cloth Diaper Detergent
    bumGenius Cloth Diaper Detergent
    Tiny Bubbles Cloth Diaper Detergent
    Allen's Naturally
    Charlie's Soap
    Country Save
    Planet Ultra (Powdered)

  • I use Rocking Green as well. Totally worth the money! Trust me. I live in Texas where we have really hard water and was having a difficult time with repelling of my inserts. The detergent bit the stinkies in the butt!
