Unemployment: What Would Reagan Do? No other recession in the past 60 years saw such rapid job destruction.

Friday's grim labor report is the latest confirmation that our economy is not recovering. A loss of 131,000 jobs and a stagnant 9.5% unemployment rate are bad enough. But a deeper look—at the little-known civilian employment-population ratio—shows how hard it's going to be to pull out of our crisis, and why the Obama administration's policies are unlikely to do the job.

In contrast to the better-known unemployment rate, which measures the percentage of working-age Americans who are actively seeking jobs but do not have one, the civilian employment-population ratio measures the percentage of working-age Americans who have a job, whether they are seeking one or not.

  • Reagan would do what one of his favorite Presidents did. That was Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge took the 1920 recession/depression - which was WORSE THAN the one in 1929 - and turned it around in a year.

Anyone remember "The Roaring 20's"? Incredible economic boom time.

What did Coolidge do to create this rapid recovery?
(The answer is: Coolidge did the stuff which conservatives have been calling for since the end of 2008 and before. Yes, that's right: the "Party of No Ideas" has been proposing ideas all along - time-PROVEN ideas. It's just that the media are not broadcasting their speeches which explain these ideas. ... I didn't even know that there was a Republican address EVERY week - the media keep it a secret ! ... and then the Republicans get accused of failing to come up with ideas.

Glenn Beck is doing a special study of Calvin Coolidge ... watch his show.

  • I am aware this wouldn't end the job crisis, but we have too many American jobs overseas. We need to bring our jobs home!! All the factory work being done over there for OUR products, it's insane. Jobs such as those aren't the best paid for most comfortable but it's a job I would take if I needed it!!

  • I don't understand all the Regan worship. He was a puppet of big business and he didn't do anything for the American people.

  • to compete, we MUST invest in America. And that means this petty, name calling nonsense has GOT TO STOP. The only way we will survive as a nation is to put our people back to work, and the best way to do that is not through tax cuts and labor credits.
