What kind of things should a 3 year old be learning?

My son is 46 month old, I just want to make sure he is learning what he should be.

He knows his colors, some shapes, counts to 10 with some help. Attempts to say the alphabet "still working on that one" And he is very good at remembering names of people and cartoons.

What else should he know?

  • Teacher here.....he sounds like he is on the right track....he should be picking up on the alphabet pretty quickly soon......pick one letter a day and talk about that letter all day at various times....Dont forget self help skills which are important to learn at his age. For instance, how to pull his pants up and down, how to put on his shirt and socks, and also introducing a real cup if he has not already learned that skill. My dd is 3 and still drinks out of a sippy if she is playing around or going somewhere. But when she is seated at the table for meal time she uses a cup. Remeber kids learn best by playing and having experiences, so pull out the playdough and paints, and take some "field" trips to the zoo, park, or local hands on museum!

  • He uses a real cup we had to switch him about 6 months ago because he kept chewing the tops. He has $3000 teeth all his front top teeth are capped and plated thanks to his father. we are working on getting dressed and the socks and shoes thing now not quite there yet though.
