how do you get a child to listen and understand when he is being disciplined

  • You need to keep it short and sweet in the moment. Use other quieter, calmer times to talk about how to behave in certain situations. Don't forget to catch them doing good. Specific, positive praise can go a long way (and also helps reinforce the behavior we're looking for).

  • you have to get down on their level. Make them look you in the eye, speak softly, calmly and on their level. Use words like, "not nice". Then make them apologize to whoever they were mean/rude too.
