What is a refurbished computer all about? Are they worth buying?

I was told not because you don't know if someone has used it and they have the ip number, which could not be good for securtity?

  • Sometimes when a computer "dies" it's only one component that's problematic (for example the video card). They replace the faulty parts, etc. so they work again.

It really depends on where you're getting it from, the specific specs of the machine, and how much it costs to buy a similar one new. Sometimes they ARE worth it, sometimes they're not. Unless you know what you're doing, I wouldn't really recommend buying refurbished except from a reputable company (ie. directly from Dell or whatever other original manufacturer).

And um... I'm not sure the easiest way to explain this, but the whole "used it and they have the ip number" is just WAY wrong for several different reasons.

As far as security, again, if you don't really know what you're doing, only buy from reputable sources.

  • The IP address - that's just the number assigned to your computer for internet purposes......But with a GOOD virus protect that also has intruder protection, your computer will be safe. Most people don't sell their computers and keep the IP number with the intention of hacking into them later. Password protect everything and keep your internet safety programs running.

  • Refurbished means Used and Repaired or just Cleaned up for resale. I wouldn't purchase a refurbished computer from anyone that I did not know.

  • All of our machines are certified refurbished machines from Dell's Outlet. As coder_chick stated the information you got regarding the IP number is WAY wrong for several different reasons. You do have to know what the current prices are and be aware of those things. However both of our machines are laptops that we bought for UNDER $600 (including shipping) from Dell's Outlet. These same machine 'new' would have been easily double in price.
