Do you have to pay for your children's shool books in grades k-12 and what state are you in?

I live in Indiana. We have to pay for school books, that are used and we don't get to keep them. I paid over $200 for a kindergardener and a second grader. The books are really old and have been paid for over and over again. I wanted to know if all states pay.

  • I just googled the topic and Indiana is 1 of 3 states that requires a textbook rental fee apparently.

  • I've never heard of that. You don't pay for public school textbooks in WV and IMO you shouldn't have to anyway because they are paid for by tax payer money to begin with. We pay, but we homeschool.

  • We are in public school. I heard Indiana is the only state in the nation. The constitution says we all get free education, not free in Indiana:

  • yes Indiana is , just paid 65 dollars for my kids books it would of been over 200 dollars and i heard Illinois and Ohio does it to. But in the old school my kids were at if you qualified for free lunch or reduced there was no rental fees.

  • I'm in Illinois, and this year the book fees for my son were $70.00. But because my son has special needs, he qualifies for FAPE( free and appropriate education) so we don't have to pay the fees, only for his P.E. uniform and when he graduates 8th grade, we have to buy his graduation gown.
