6 die in family murder-suicide in upscale LA home, Economy is killing Americans

"LOS ANGELES - An unemployed man with an advanced finance degree who was despondent over his own financial problems shot and killed his wife, three children, mother-in-law and then himself in an upscale home in a gated community, police said Monday. The man had a master's of business administration in finance, formerly worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and Sony Pictures, but had been unemployed for several months, Deputy Chief Michel Moore said." By CHRISTINA HOAG, Associated Press Writer Can we expect more suicides as our economy sinks deeper and deeper into depression?

  • If you look back into the 29 crash, it was the wealthy jumping out of windows and committing suicide, they didnt know how to live any other way. It was the poor and middleclass that survived and toughed it out. More than likely this family had more problems than just money. I do not blame the economy on that story, more like personal greed, cowardice and depression.

  • Many years ago, I remember reading about how men committed suicide when they lost everything in the stock market crash and during the great depression.

  • Well i'm reasonably sure that man wasn't stable in his mind regardless if the economy is sucking or not. Any man who loves his family won't kill them over it. Yes it seems like we are headed for depression but suicides over it? I don't know....There must have been a deeper underlying problem for a man to be so cold hearted to kill his own wife and children...I doubt it was simply because of debt and no money so the answer to your question is no, I don't think so...Only the crazy people.

  • I heard that on the news this afternoon , how horrible!!! They simply need to do something about the economy before more of things like this happen. He left 3 letters one of which explained the financial diffculties. So sad people are starting to resort to things like this

  • man, this is really sad.... he should have just did himself and not the family...them poor kids......

i think this will happen a lot more WHEN our economy crashes, the pressure will be to much, i just hope people will not take the innocent family members with them.

  • That's ridiculous to say that the economy is killing Americans. There are SEVERAL things that the family could have done to "survive". If you are living above your means (regardless of the economical situation) you will go into debt. It takes a VERY weak person to KILL his ENTIRE family including himself just because they were in debt. When money gets low you sacrifice to survive. You sell your home, sell your car,GET ANOTHER JOB, cut-back on expenses, get government assistance, file for bankruptcy, etcetera, etcetera (the list can go on and on)..YOU DON'T kill your entire family! The economy didn't kill that family, the HUSBAND and FATHER killed that family. I feel NO pity for somebody who does that.

  • Unfortunately the world isn't merely made up of the sane. There have been people who have killed for less.

I'm actually surprised we haven't seen more of this with the drops in the stock market.

sell your home - for two thirds of what you pay for it, if you're lucky enough to find a buyer who can get credit for a mortgage, and then you're without a home and still on the hook for the rest of your own mortgage

sell your car - again, for less than it's worth, if you can find a buyer

GET ANOTHER JOB - yeah, I'm sure that just didn't occur to the guy who'd been out of work for months.

get government assitance - not likely if you're unable to dump your "assets"

file for bankruptcy - a lot harder to do now than it was, thanks to changes in the law.

  • Debate it all you want..there ARE steps that a person can take. There is absolutely NO excuse for murdering your family..unless you are completely insane.

Once upon a time people didn't have cars or own houses. They didn't kill their familes just because they had to go without.
