What should i use to soften poop so it comes out better?

my girl is 4 months old, i slowly switched from breast milk to formula and she has now been on straight formula for three days, today she's having trouble pooping...it came out like our poop looks like not soft and mushy like it should. What can i do to help her and get it soft again?

  • that's what happens usually when you switch to formula. If she's pooping it's ok if it's little hard turds, you worry when she stops pooping. She'll also poop a lot less frequently. At 4 months old there is nothing you can do, do NOT water down the formula, you can give her a 4 oz bottle with two oz of water and two oz of juice (100% no sugar added) and that might help but don't give her too much. If you get concerned you can call her pediatritian for ideas, but it's pretty normal for her to have hard turds. ;)

  • try some mylicon drops in the formula. if the hard poop persists, don't let it get worse it can cause bigger problems. i had to use suppositories on my daughter when she was really young. talk to your pediatrician for advice.

  • Diet changes = stool changes. As long as it's not dry, hard or pellet like, I'd probably just leave it be. Mylicon is for gas, it's not going to soften stool. Suppositories are for true constipation. Karo syrup carries a slight risk of botulism spores, like honey, and their website specifies not to use it for infants.
