Anyone live in a neighborhood with a "Covenant"?

What do you think? Is it good, bad,or a little of both? Do you have a good "board of directors"? what are some of the silliest bylaws or things they spent the neighborhood money on? Or the most bizarre complaints they have enforced?

  • we a military, so it is similar, we cannot put signs up in the neighborhood, not even for a yardsale, that is the worst, but the no loud music in cars or homes is nice!

  • we did. the one thing that came up and was 'tested' was this family building a storage building in the back of their property. it was half-way finished, beginning to resemble their home's style et al, when construction was stopped because of someone's noisy nitpicking complaint. now, the ironic part is, out of 16 homes on our street, there must've been at least 6 properties that had non-matching storage sheds/buildings..some were the cheap portable type. no one ever got their dander up about those!!
anyhoo, the family finally were ok'd to continue/finish, and it looks like a smaller replica of their actual house...as it was intended to.

covenants can be good..and neighbors can be bad...depending on who wants what done.

  • NO WAY!! We worked too hard to be able to buy our home to let some busy bodies tell us when and where to cut the grass, how long we can keep our sprinklers on, how many and what kind of flowers/shrubs and trees we can plant, whether or not we can make noise before 10AM, and/or what color our shed is!! LOL Those are all rules I have heard of in the past from friends and family members that live in HOA developments!! NO THANKS! :o)

  • Mind you, we keep our home and grounds immaculate, because that's the way we like it, not because someone else told us to!! :o)

  • We live in a neighborhood with an HOA and love it! I like that we don't have to worry about couches on the front porch, broken down vehicles in the driveway and overgrown yards. I know, extreme examples, but you get my point. Everyone has to keep their properties perfect, exactly what we want to see when we step out our front door.

  • We do. I agree with them. None of the restrictions are strict just common sense. It basically states to keep your yard maintained, if you build a shed make sure it matches your house, can't put a trailor up in your yard, no chain link fences etc. The only problem is nobody enforces them but really there hasn't been any problems thus far...

  • My MIL just moved into a place with an HOA. The previous owners left the outside a mess, all weeds, etc. They were just moving in and someone came around and said that the weeds needed to be pulled by the end of the weekend or they would be fined. Seriously?? They were just moving in and they wanted the weeds pulled NOW!!
While it was nice that they aren't going to let someone let weeds grow all over the place, could they have given them time to move in?
